Relic of the Deep: The Vampire Squid

Despite its menacing name (Vampyroteuthis infernalis, meaning 'vampire squid from hell'), this deep-sea creature doesn't suck blood; it delicately feeds on 'marine snow' – sinking organic detritus. Living in oxygen-minimum zones where few other complex animals can survive, it uses a unique defense called the 'pineapple posture,' inverting its webbed arms over its body when threatened. It's considered a living fossil, the last surviving member of its unique order.
