The X-Ray Shoe Fitter

From the 1920s to the 1950s, shoe stores featured fluoroscopes, which used X-rays to show a customer's foot bones inside a shoe. Marketed as a scientific way to ensure a perfect fit, these devices gave off dangerous, unregulated doses of radiation to customers and employees alike. As the health risks of radiation became clear, they were phased out and banned.
