It's hard to imagine today, but smoking was once permitted almost everywhere, from airplanes to hospital waiting rooms. Doctors sometimes even appeared in cigarette ads, and the smoke-filled cabin of a 747 was the norm. Decades of research linking secondhand smoke to cancer and other diseases led to sweeping public smoking bans, clearing the air for good.
