A Touch of Quicksilver

The glass fever thermometer, filled with a sliver of mercury (quicksilver), was a staple in every family's medicine cabinet for over a century. If the thermometer broke, the released mercury could vaporize, creating a toxic inhalation hazard, or contaminate the home environment. Due to these risks, they have been phased out and banned in many states in favor of safer digital alternatives.
