Teaching at Oxford University began as early as 1096, and the university was officially founded by 1167. By contrast, the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán, the capital of their empire, was founded in 1325. This makes one of the world's most prestigious universities hundreds of years older than one of history's most famous civilizations.
