Sociologists and first responders have found that in the terrifying event of a house fire or natural disaster, family photo albums are universally the most evacuated item. When faced with losing everything, humans will abandon expensive electronics and jewelry to grab fading ink on paper. Our brains do not view these photos as objects, but as literal, irreplaceable extensions of our loved ones.
