Standard printed photos degrade quickly due to acids in cheap paper and exposure to ultraviolet light. To ensure favorite family memories survive the test of time, conservationists use acid-free archival boxes and cotton-rag paper. A properly stored archival photograph can outlive its subject by well over a century.
