To take cherished family photos indoors during the early 1900s, photographers relied on a highly combustible mixture called flash powder. Igniting it created a brilliant flash of light, but it often filled the room with thick, blinding smoke. In extreme cases, capturing a holiday memory resulted in severe burns or house fires.
