Introduced in 1839, the daguerreotype was the first commercially successful photographic process. For the first time, wealthy families could immortalize their favorite moments on silver-plated copper sheets. To ensure subjects didn't blur, photographers used hidden metal neck braces to keep heads perfectly still.
