Getting a baby to sit still for a slow-exposure photograph was a nearly impossible task in the 19th century. Photographers solved this by having the mother hold the child while covered completely in a heavy fabric or disguised as a chair. These hidden mother photos look incredibly eerie today, but they were acts of maternal dedication.
