We use the word snapshot constantly when talking about family photos, but the term did not originate with cameras. It was originally a 19th-century hunting term for shooting a firearm hastily without carefully aiming. When handheld cameras became popular, the phrase was perfectly adapted to describe quickly captured, spontaneous family moments.
