The Forbidden City in Beijing was the imperial palace for nearly 500 years and is the world's largest palace complex. Legend says it has 9,999.5 rooms, just short of the divine 10,000 rooms believed to be in heaven. It was strictly forbidden for commoners to enter, hence its name.
