Inventor Zhang Heng created an ornate bronze vessel with dragons and toads that could supposedly detect earthquakes from hundreds of miles away. When an earthquake occurred, a bronze ball would drop from a dragon's mouth into a toad's mouth, indicating the quake's direction.
