The Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas, opened in 1929 and thrived through the midcentury as a luxury spa resort. It closed in 1972, and for nearly 50 years its 14 floors of faded grandeur, including a magnificent ballroom and clouded pool, stood silent and empty.
