The main roles were notoriously hard to cast. Robert Shaw (Quint) initially disliked the script, Roy Scheider (Brody) was a late choice after the first actor dropped out, and Richard Dreyfuss (Hooper) turned the role down multiple times before fearing he'd never get another good part.
