The production was plagued by three malfunctioning mechanical sharks, nicknamed "Bruce" after Spielberg's lawyer. This happy accident forced Spielberg to use suspense and suggestion by keeping the shark off-screen for much of the film, making its eventual appearance even more terrifying.
