Robert Shaw's chilling USS Indianapolis speech was largely his own work.
The film's most haunting scene, where Quint describes the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, was not in the novel. While initially drafted by other writers, actor Robert Shaw, a skilled playwright, heavily re-wrote and edited the 4-minute monologue into the masterpiece seen in the final cut, cementing its place as one of cinema's greatest speeches.
