Musical memory operates independently from other types of memory, meaning it is incredibly resistant to cognitive decline. Patients with severe Alzheimer's who have lost the ability to speak can often perfectly recall and sing songs from their youth. Listening to familiar tunes awakens dormant parts of their brain, temporarily restoring their personality and memories of the past.
