The Message in the Beer Barrel

While imprisoned by her cousin Queen Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots, used coded messages to conspire with her supporters. The notes, which detailed a plot to assassinate Elizabeth, were smuggled in and out of her castle inside hollowed-out beer barrel bungs. However, Elizabeth's spymaster intercepted the messages, leading directly to Mary's trial and execution.
