A Normal Tuesday Rush

The lunchtime crowd was a familiar storm of noise and clatter.

A Normal Tuesday Rush
The lunch crowd rolled in waves: construction vests flashing safety orange, a law clerk in a too-tight tie reading motions between bites, three nurses in pastel scrubs trading night-shift gossip over bottomless coffee. Fluorescent light hummed faintly above silver napkin dispensers, and the bell over the door chimed every time the wind shouldered through. Chloe threaded the aisles with a tray balanced high, heels of her sneakers whispering on checkerboard tile. The diner smelled like bacon salt and coffee steam, with a ribbon of lemon cleaner from the morning mopping. She liked the choreography of it—plates cued on the pass, the line cook’s “Order up!”, the way her hands knew where the ketchup was even with eyes closed. In the mirror that ran the length of the counter, her face looked composed and practical, hair twisted into a no-nonsense knot, a pencil tucked behind one ear like an exclamation point. For her, it was just another shift, another day of balancing plates and pleasantries. Or so she thought.
