Jessica slid out a platinum card the color of bragging and passed it with two fingers, eyes already back on her messages. Chloe swiped. The machine chirped, thought, then flashed DECLINED in red as merciless as a siren. She tried again, angling the stripe, then keyed the numbers manually. Same red verdict. Around them, plates clinked, a coffee grinder roared, a toddler laughed too loud. “I’m sorry,” Chloe said, lowering her voice instinctively, building a small privacy in the public room. “It looks like there’s a hold on this card.”
