An Unexpected Choice

Chloe saw a person, not a monster.

An Unexpected Choice
“I believe you,” Chloe said simply. She slid the receipt toward her, where her own handwriting read: PAID IN FULL — FOR THE MEAL, ANYWAY. Jessica stared at it for a long time, her breathing uneven. Then she nodded once, a silent surrender. Chloe walked toward the counter, the check still clutched in her hand. Her shoes made no sound against the old tile floor. Her reflection in the chrome panel looked older than she remembered. Not tired, exactly, but changed. This isn’t about the money, she thought. It’s about ending a story that should’ve ended years ago. When she turned, Jessica was standing now, her purse half-open, uncertainty written across her face. She wasn’t the confident woman who had walked in thirty minutes earlier; she was smaller, stripped bare of all the armor her success had bought. “You don’t have to do that,” Jessica said quietly. Her voice was rough, shaky — the kind of voice people use when they’ve been silent for too long. Chloe approached slowly. “I know,” she said. “But I wanted to.” Jessica frowned. “Why?” “Because someone has to stop the cycle,” Chloe said. “And today, that’s me.”
