Service With A Smile
Chloe chose professionalism over bitterness.
“Absolutely,” Chloe said, amazed at the steadiness of her tone. “We cut avocados at eleven. They’re perfect right now.” Her pen scribbled with professional speed. “Anything else I can get started?” Jessica lifted a hand vaguely, the gesture of a person who expects the world to translate. Chloe smiled because that was the job, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. On the way to the pass, she passed Rico. “You good?” he murmured, having clocked the rigid angle of her shoulders. “I’m fine,” she lied, and he squeezed her elbow the way people in restaurants do when there’s no time for more.
