The Lunar Module (LM) was a two-part spacecraft designed only to fly in the vacuum of space and land on the Moon. It was so fragile that it couldn't support its own weight in Earth's gravity. Its spidery appearance was pure function, built with ultra-thin metal skin to be as lightweight as possible for the journey.
