Re-entering Earth's atmosphere is a violent, high-stakes maneuver. The Apollo command module hit the atmosphere at nearly 25,000 mph, creating a fireball with temperatures reaching 5,000°F — half as hot as the sun's surface. The capsule's heat shield was the only thing preventing the astronauts from being incinerated.
