While people have always journeyed, the first person documented as a "tourist" in the modern sense was Cyriacus of Ancona. In the 15th century, this Italian merchant traveled across the Mediterranean to see ancient Greek and Egyptian ruins out of pure historical curiosity. He is sometimes called the father of modern archaeology.
