Before plastic bodies, potatoes did the job just fine
It’s hard to imagine now, but kids once gleefully stabbed plastic eyes and noses into real vegetables — and loved every minute of it. Mr. Potato Head was silly, a little chaotic, and endlessly creative. Early accessory sets from the 1950s are now collectible curiosities, often selling for $20 to $60, with more complete groupings worth even more. A classic case of playtime getting gloriously messy.
