Cool Air, Hot Planet
CFC refrigerants like Freon.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), commonly known by the brand name Freon, were the standard refrigerant in air conditioners and refrigerators for much of the 20th century. In the 1970s, scientists discovered that CFCs were destroying the Earth's protective ozone layer. This led to the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty phasing out and banning their production globally.
