In the 1920s, tetraethyl lead (TEL) was added to gasoline to boost octane levels and prevent engine 'knocking.' For decades, cars exhausted fine lead particles into the atmosphere, causing massive environmental contamination and public health issues, including neurological damage. Leaded gasoline was phased out and finally banned by the Clean Air Act for on-road vehicles in 1996.
