An Ancestral Echo

Goosebumps are caused by tiny muscles flexing at the base of each hair follicle, a reflex called piloerection. For our furry ancestors, this action trapped a layer of air to increase insulation or made them appear larger to intimidate predators. While modern humans lack the thick coat of fur to make this effective, the ancient muscle reflex remains.
