Before the invention of photography, preserving a family's likeness required commissioning a painted portrait, which was incredibly expensive and time-consuming. Only the wealthiest families could afford to leave behind a visual record of their faces for future generations to cherish. For the vast majority of history, people lived and died without ever knowing what their great-grandparents looked like.
