Introduced in 1839, the daguerreotype was the first commercially successful photographic process. Families suddenly had a relatively affordable way to capture a highly detailed, permanent image of their loved ones on a silver-plated copper sheet. These early photos were kept in velvet-lined cases and passed down as incredibly precious family heirlooms.
