If you look through old family photos, you will rarely see a smiling face from the 19th century. Beyond the long exposure times making smiles hard to hold, poor dental hygiene meant many adults preferred to keep their mouths closed. Furthermore, early photography took cues from fine art painting, where smiling was historically associated with madness or drunkenness.
