The Hidden Mothers

Because infants could rarely hold still for long exposures, Victorian photographers invented an unusual workaround. Mothers would hold their babies while completely draped in dark patterned fabrics or hiding behind curtains so they blended into the background. These eerie 'hidden mother' photos were the only way families could capture their wiggling children.
