Many believe our ancestors were unhappy because they rarely smile in antique family portraits. However, early cameras simply required long exposure times, and holding a genuine smile for three minutes is physically exhausting. Smiling was also culturally viewed as inappropriate for formal portraiture, which was heavily influenced by traditional oil paintings.
