In 1848, a railroad accident blasted a tamping iron straight through Phineas Gage's left cheek and out the top of his head. Miraculously, he survived the initial injury and lived for another 12 years, becoming a famous case study in brain injury. His survival and subsequent personality changes offered the first major insights into the brain's functions.
