This photograph was recovered from the wreckage of Japan Airlines Flight 123, which crashed on August 12, 1985. After an explosive decompression tore off the tailfin, the pilots struggled for 32 minutes to control the crippled Boeing 747. This image, showing deployed oxygen masks, captures the terrifying atmosphere before the crash that killed 520 of the 524 people aboard.
